Possible developments on Watertown’s horizon

The development boom in Watertown shows no sign of waining, as developers continue to approach town officials with redevelopment possibilities.

The most popular use for the new developments is lab and office space for life science firms, said Steve Magoon, the assistant Town Manager and director of the Department of Community Development and Planning.

Some of the locations where developers would like to create lab facilities are the Doble Engineering space on Walnut Street, the former Colonial Buick/GMC dealership on Galen Street, and the former Fluid Management Systems location on Pleasant Street.

Biotech firms have already moved, or plan to move, into other developments in Watertown, such as the Linx Building off Arsenal Street, and others have signed leases in Arsenal Yards, the redevelopment of the Arsenal Mall.

Other developers have looked at creating other types of businesses, Magoon said, including self storage and adult-use marijuana dispensaries.

He told the Town Council that his department has a dual role.

“A number of entities are interested in coming into the community to do economic development,” Magoon said. “Our job is to encourage that, and at the same time maintain the character of the community.”
