Phase 3 reopening to start Monday

Phase 3 reopening to start Monday

Select business on the Phase 3 reopening list received the green light to commence operations this Monday July 6, Gov. Charlie Baker just announced.

As with the prior phase, Phase 3 has been divided into two parts. Businesses cleared for opening Monday include fitness centers and health clubs (at 40 percent maximum occupancy), museums and cultural facilities, small guided tours and casinos.

Professional sports teams can also resume with no spectators.

The second half of Phase 3, will begin at a date to be determined. Baker said the time between this phase “will last significantly longer than other phases” as his administration monitors health data.

Indoor gatherings will be limited to eight people per 1,000 square feet but should not include more than 25 people. Gatherings in enclosed outdoor spaces are limited to 25 percent or 100 people.

That gathering rules in Boston are delayed to Monday, July 13.

The state will also launch a marketing campaign to promote safe ways to enjoy tourist attractions.

Asked if he was concerned about a rebound of the virus as has happened in other parts of the country, Baker said people of Massachusetts and employers have “demonstrated time and time again” that they’ve been willing to abide by the rules and follow the guidelines.

He also said that part of the problem that led to spike in other states was the reopening or bars and nightclubs.

Bars, nightclub and other large venues will not reopen until Phase 4, which Baker won’t happen until there is the availability of therapeutics or a vaccine.

Baker urged the public to “continue to be smart about how we do this. The last thing we want to do is move backwards as we’ve seen other states have to do.”
