Pandemic doesn't stop golf tournament

Even with players in masks and social distancing protocols in place, the chamber’s 29th annual Children’s Charitable Golf Tournament on August 3rd at the Woodland Golf Club in Newton continued its sold out streak and was once again able to successfully support a member nonprofit. A huge thanks to the team at Woodland for making it possible for the chamber to continue this tradition.

Newton’s John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club
, an organization that inspires and enables young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens, was this year’s recipient of a portion of the tournament’s proceeds.

The Village Bank returned as the presenting sponsor of the tournament and opted to forego sponsor player gifts and instead apply that amount to the Boys & Girls Club tournament proceeds.

Players dined on box lunches in their individually assigned carts while hearing opening announcements from Joseph De Vito, president & CEO of The Village Bank; David Sellers, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club; and Nathan Dorval, the Boys & Girls Club’s 2020 Youth of the Year.

A foursome from Newton-Wellesley Hospital completed the tournament in first place. Placing second was a foursome from Schlesinger and Buchbinder, LLP. A foursome hosted by North Hill placed third. All three top finishers had a score of 56 forcing a tie breaker match of cards - the lowest net on the back 9 distinguished 2nd place and the lowest net on the last 6 distinguished 3rd place.

Seana Gaherin from Dunn-Gaherin’s Food & Spirits won the contest for Longest Drive for Women; Raymond Ricci won the Men’s Longest Drive and immediately donated his prize to Dorval.

Rich Dipiro of North Hill, won the Hit the Green Contest. The top three finishers of our Putting Contest, sponsored by The Bulfinch Group, were Paul Howley (1st place), Harry Goodale of North Hill (2nd place), and Steve Galavotti of Newton-Wellesley Hospital (3rd place).

Additional sponsor support was provided by Cambridge Savings BankNewton-Wellesley Hospital, and the NOREL Service Co., Inc.
