New vaccine clinics sites opening locally

Newton-Wellesley opens vaccine clinic today at TripAdvisor's Needham HQ

Clinics also set in Newton at Mount Ida campus and soon at Wells Ave

Tripadvisor is lending the first floor of its Needham headquarters to Newton-Wellesley Hospital rent free to serve as a community vaccination center for eligible Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Mass General Brigham patients starting today. (Boston Globe story here.)

Newton-Wellesley Hospital will manage the vaccine program and plans to operate seven days a week to maximize patient access to the vaccine. Only patients with approved scheduled appointments will be accommodated—there will be no walk-in service. Newton-Wellesley Hospital aims to initially vaccinate 630 patients per day, depending on supply, and has plans to expand access as appropriate.

“The way to a post-pandemic world includes the equitable distribution of a vaccine, and we’re pleased we can partner with Newton-Wellesley Hospital to make this community vaccination center a reality,” said Steve Kaufer, CEO and co-founder of Tripadvisor, Inc. “We’re glad to do our part to help our local community recover from COVID-19, and encourage others in the private sector to explore how they might use their resources to speed the vaccination process so we can all move beyond this pandemic.”

“We are thrilled to partner with our local neighbor, Tripadvisor, so we can quickly provide a potentially life-saving vaccine to our patients,” said Errol R. Norwitz, MD, President of Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Tripadvisor is located at 400 1st Avenue, just off of I-95/Rte. 128; near I-90 and Rte. 9, in the area known as
N-Squared Innovation District. Free parking is available to visitors via a multi-level parking garage located across the courtyard. Designated handicap spots are available near the building entrance.

Two others sites also offering or will soon offer vaccines in Newton

The Mount Ida Campus of UMass Amherst in Newton is now open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through at least March 19 to administer the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to eligible individuals.

The Holtzman Medical Group plans to vaccinate between 200 and 250 individuals per day at the clinic and is working to increase capacity. New appointments will be posted here on a rolling basis. All eligible individuals must schedule an appointment in advance. Registrants do not need to be patients of the medical practice or affiliated with UMass.

“We’re proud to continue to find ways to support the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in our host communities,” UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy said in a statement. “This clinic will make vaccines more accessible to eligible individuals throughout Greater Boston, reflecting our commitment to utilizing our Newton campus to extend our statewide community and public service initiatives.”

In addition, Beth Israel Lahey Health and the BID Needham also announced plans to open a vaccine clinic at the site of the old Boston Sports Club, located at 135 Wells Avenue in Newton. The vaccination site will be open 7 days a week beginning in mid-February.

How to know when you're eligible

Use this tool to determine if you currently qualify for a vaccine and for a map of locations state wide.

The state is now offering two ways to search for a vaccine site near you: By this map or by zip code. You can also download a list here.

As of Jan. 29, only 390,000 Massachusetts residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine. Only one percent of all eligible residents have been fully vaccinated. The Globe has created this tool that illustrates how far we have to go. And to see how those numbers break down by age group, profession, race and ethnicity, and more, check these charts.
