Local shoppers will be descending on downtown Needham on Saturday, April 30 to demonstrate their appreciation for the town’s retailers and restaurants.

It’s all part of a “cash mob,” sponsored by the Chamber’s Shop Local and Needham Economic Development Committees in partnership with Parent Talk, the YMCA and other local organizations.

“A ‘cash mob’ is like a ‘flash mob,’ except instead of asking people to break out into a song or dance we ask participants to fan out and show support of our local merchants by spending at least $10 at any downtown Needham shop or restaurant of their choice,” explains Chamber President Greg Reibman.

“Our local businesses are always here supporting our non-profits, our schools and our local clubs and teams. This is a chance for the rest of us to give back and say thanks.”

Beginning at 10 a.m., participants are being asked to gather on the Needham Town Common for a group photo and brief announcement before dispersing around downtown Needham to shop.

“Shopping locally boosts the local economy, creates jobs, and supports the character of Needham,” said Paula Jacobson, executive director of the Charles River YMCA. “Local businesses are more likely to support local events, schools, charities and sports groups. The Charles River Y is proud to partner with our chamber and encourages everyone to participate in the Cash Mob on April 30 and support our community.”

"As a community-based non-profit organization, ParentTalk values the support from local businesses and restaurants, said Susan Kagan, Parent Talk, Executive Director. “We see this as a small way to give back.”

Also joining the festivities for the Cash Mob will be Needham resident Mike Riley from 98.5 The Sports Hub and former Red Sox pitcher Ken Ryan.

“One of the greatest things about Needham is how our community — residents and businesses alike — pull together,” said Chris Teachout, vice president of business development at Needham Bank and first vice chair of the chamber’s board of directors. “And we’re excited that Mike Riley and Ken Ryan are joining in on April 30 to show their support for our merchants.”

Meet for the Needham Cash Mob on Saturday April 30 at 10 a.m. on the Needham Town Common. After a very brief speaking program, we will take a group photo and then encourage everyone in attendance to spend at least $10 at any Needham Center merchant or restaurant.
