Meals tax added to state's tax-free holiday

Meals tax added to state's tax-free holiday

For the first time, state and local meals taxes will be included as part of Massachusetts annual sales tax free holiday on weekend of Aug. 17 and 18, 2019.

Meals, and non-alcoholic beverages served with meals, will be exempt from the sales tax on Aug. 17 and 18. However alcoholic beverages are ineligible and still subject to sales tax.

Both state and municipal meals taxes will also be exempt during the time period.

Restaurants (particularly those that serve alcohol) and other businesses that have not previously participated in a tax free weekend are encouraged to begin planning now for the holiday weekend to review point of sale systems and compliance rules.

The Mass Department of Revenue has posted frequently asked questions here. Or call (617) 887-6367 (select #4 for sales tax).
