Improvements at intersection of Oak, Christina & Needham Streets delayed
A project designed to improve the intersection where Oak and Christina Streets cross Needham Street has been delayed due to coordination with a utility company, the City of Newton announced today.
This project was originally scheduled to begin in May and completed before Labor Day. But it's been delayed because the city is waiting for Verizon to move some utility lines.
This comparatively small project is separate from the long-planned major renovation of Needham Street and Highland Ave., which has also been delayed, but as Gov. Charlie Baker told the chamber this spring will begin in 2019.
The work at Oak and Christina, being done in collaboration with Massachusetts Department of Transportation, would realign the two streets to improve traffic flow and make the intersection more pedestrian friendly. Work is now anticipated to begin late summer/early fall and may go into spring of 2018 due to weather impacts. The project includes:
- New traffic signals
- Implement optimal timing and phasing of traffic signals
- Geometric improvements to the intersection
- Realignment of Christina St. to match with Oak St.
- Land takings at the west and east corner of Christina St. (by Mass DOT)
- New crosswalks and accessible curb cut ramps
- Maintain drainage infrastructure
- Milling and paving of roadway surface
- Upgrade pavement markings and signs
To finance this project, the city secured $1,5 million in Mass Works funding and is investing $309,420 of municipal funds.
