The Newton-Needham Regional Chamber is now among the state’s largest; moving for the first time onto the Boston Business Journal’s top-10 largest chamber list.

“Bucking the trend reported by the majority of the organizations on this year’s BBJ list of the ‘Largest Chambers of Commerce in Massachusetts,’ the regional chambers located in Newton/Needham and in Westborough both reported significant increases in their membership totals over the past year,” the newspaper reported on Aug. 16.

Newton-Needham added 126 members to leap from No. 11 to No. 7 on the BBJ’s annual list. The Corridor Nine Area Chamber, which serves five communities in the east central part of the state, added 72 members to leap from No. 22 to No. 16 on the list.

“They were the only chambers on the two most recent lists to report double-digit year-over-year percentage increases in their membership numbers,” BBJ reporter Joe Halpern wrote. “Meanwhile, 16 of the 25 chambers on the list lost a cumulative 718 members from July 2017 to July 2018, a total of 6.3 percent of their combined membership in the last year.”

Chamber President Greg Reibman attributed much of the Newton-Needham’s growth to last December’s closing of the Watertown-Belmont Chamber and an endorsement by that chamber’s leadership to encourage its members to join Newton-Needham, as well as the merger in January with the Needham Business Association.

The Worcester Regional Chamber remains the state’s largest, followed by the BostonSouth ShoreCape CodNorth Shore and Merrimack Valley chambers.
