Chamber supports a YES vote on Needham’s Pollard Middle School override

Chamber Announcements

On Nov. 3, Needham voters will decide whether to approve a $243 million debt-exclusion override to fund a new Pollard Middle School. The Charles River Chamber supports a YES vote on this override.

Over the past several months, we’ve reached out to Needham businesses and hosted forums to better understand the business community’s perspective on this tax increase.

Through our outreach, two things have become clear: Needham’s strong public schools are among its greatest economic assets, and the proposal before voters represents the most cost-effective path forward.

The quality of Needham’s schools extends beyond the classroom. They attract families who invest in homes, shop and dine locally and contribute to the community. That supports property values, strengthens the tax base and helps sustain the municipal services and infrastructure that make Needham a desirable place to live and do business.

Rejecting the override won't eliminate the need to replace Pollard Middle School. It only delays the inevitable, likely at a significantly higher cost and potentially without the $80 million in state funding currently available. Additionally, the proposed auditorium will provide much-needed space for local arts and cultural organizations.

But while we endorse this project, we’d be remiss not to share our concerns with town leaders and residents: This override will add to the financial burden on Needham businesses and could make it harder to attract future employers.

Our businesses are already under tremendous pressure. Inflation, tariffs, labor shortages, interest rates and rising health insurance and operating costs are squeezing local employers. And because of Needham’s split tax rate, commercial property owners will shoulder a disproportionate share of the Pollard override.

We support voting yes because we support sound investments in infrastructure and the investment in future generations. But support isn’t a blank check. Needham’s businesses need the town to work with them to make operating here less burdensome and more financially sustainable.
