The Newton-Needham Regional Chamber has chosen the John M. Barry Boys and Girls Club of Newton to be the nonprofit beneficiary of its 29th Annual Children’s Charitable Golf Tournament happening at Woodland Golf Club on Mon. Aug. 3.

Each year, the chamber’s golf committee selects a different local nonprofit whose mission includes working with children to be the recipient of a portion of the tournament’s proceeds.This year’s selection of the Boys & Girls Club is notable because the club was forced to cancel its 2020 annual tournament, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For 36 consecutive years the John M. Barry Boys and Girls Club has hosted its own golf tournament to support its efforts to provide caring, affordable programs for kids from 5 to 18,” said Chamber President Greg Reibman.“When we heard that they’d be canceling their event this summer, we immediately wanted to jump in and help.”

“The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club is very grateful to the Newton-Needham Chamber for designating us as the beneficiary of proceeds from their annual golf tournament,” said Executive Director David Sellers. “We appreciate that the chamber came to our rescue, and to the rescue of Newton kids."  

The Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to inspire and enable young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. The club works in conjunction with local schools to help members succeed academically, give back to their community and choose healthy lifestyles. Caring adult guidance provides a safe environment, a sense of belonging, and engaging educational programs—after school, during school holidays and in a summer day camp.

Serving more than 125 young people daily, the Boys & Girls Club offers over 150 age-appropriate activities in the arts, food preparation, athletics/fitness, education, computer competence, vocational guidance, leadership and life skills, and supervised social recreation, with special programs for young children, teens and girls only.

Sellers said the funds will directly support the many programs the club offers to help young people stay safe, active, and engaged during afterschool hours and the summer.

“Direct support like this makes all the difference during this most difficult time,” he said.

In keeping with state and city reopening regulations the chamber has been working closely with Woodland Golf Club to deliver a top-notch golf outing while adhering to all safety recommendations.

The tournament will not include the traditional post-event reception but there will be food and beverages (including beer and wine) available on the course throughout the day as well as a boxed lunch. Each player will be assigned an individual cart and should maintain a 6’ distance from others throughout the day. Masks will be required. Additional adjustments may be made based on current recommendations.

The Village Bank is once again returning as a multi-year presenting sponsor of the chamber’s tournament. Returning as sponsors are Cambridge Savings Bank and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Norel Service Co, Inc. has also jumped on board as a sponsor for this year’s tournament. The Bulfinch Group has committed to sponsoring the putting contest on the course.

The 29th Annual Children’s Charitable Golf Tournament takes place Monday, Aug.3 at Woodland Golf Club, 1897 Washington St. in Newton. Lunch and registration begin at 12 p.m. with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun.Registration fee includes all green fees and cart, lunch, putting contest, use of practice facilities, prizes for top teams and a gift for each player. Early Bird Rates through July 5: $345/golfer, $1380/foursome, $1500/foursome plus tee sign. After July 5: $370/golfer, $1480/foursome.
