Yoga and the Yamas: Mindful Living on the Mat and Beyond
Yoga and the Yamas: Mindful Living on the Mat and Beyond
Deepen your yoga practice by exploring how the principles of yoga can extend beyond the mat and into everyday life.
Throughout this special series, Mary will introduce participants to the five Yamas, guiding principles in yoga philosophy that offer an opportunity to think more deeply about how we relate to ourselves, others, and the way we move through the world.
Throughout the series, you'll explore:
• Ahimsa- Non harming or non-violence
• Satya- Truthfulness
• Asteya- Non greed
• Brahmacharya- Moderation and non-excess
• Aparigraha- Non-attachment to a certain outcome
Each class will begin with a guided meditation and an introduction to the Yama that will serve as the focus for that practice. As you move through the class, Mary will invite you to consider how the principle might be expressed on the mat, such as practicing compassion toward yourself as you move through the asanas.
The practice will close with an opportunity to reflect on how these principles can extend beyond the studio and into everyday life, from our relationships and responsibilities to the ways we care for ourselves and live in greater alignment with who we are.
The series takes inspiration from Deborah Adele's The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice. Reading the book is recommended for those interested in exploring the concepts more deeply, but is not required to participate.
