Internship Part Time Retail/Wholesale Food Industry and Restaurants

Summary: Responsible for fulfilling customer orders, totaling bills, accepting payment, and making change for customers in the retail store.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. * Denotes an Essential Function.

  • Fulfills customer orders, totaling bills, accepting payment, and making change for customers in the retail store.*
  • Provides excellent customer service, addressing customer's needs in a timely and effective manner.*
  • Answers phones, takes orders and answers questions promptly and courteously (i.e., in-person and on the phone) concerning product price, ingredients, orders and general store information.*
  • Maintains, or ensures maintenance of, an orderly, clean and sanitary working area and retail seating area in accordance with Sugar Bakery's cleanliness and safety standards.*
  • Stocks bakery cases, coffee station and wall racks with product and counter with paper products. *
  • Maintains supply of folded bakery boxes.*
  • Monitors product quality for freshness and ensures proper product rotation within the display case, following standard procedures.*
  • Grinds and brews coffee and prepares specialty coffee drinks using the espresso machine.*
  • Packages, transports and stores freshly baked product.*
  • Operates the FoodTec Point of Sales (POS) system.*
  • Totals price and tax on products purchased by customer to determine bill, process and accept payments and make change.*
  • Packages or prepares product for orders or as selected by customer.*
  • Completes and signs the Closing Checklist.*
  • Performs light cleaning tasks, including but not limited to sweeping and mopping floors, removing and taking out trash.*
  • Ensures strict adherence to all applicable Food Safety and compliance duties required.*
  • Handles high pressure and volume, and works quickly.  Follow instructions and direction, and has excellent communication skills.*
  • Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, organization and efficiency, with excellent time management skills.*
  • Maintains a positive, high energy, friendly, enthusiastic, team-oriented attitude.*
  • Reads, writes and speaks English fluently.*
  • Works Part Time/Full Time hours, depending on time of year. Holidays may require overtime.*
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

Qualifications:

Language Ability:

Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.


Math Ability:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.


Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Basic knowledge - FoodTec Point of Sales (POS).


Specialized Training:

  • Prior experience within a bakery/restaurant, retail, and or customer service preferred.

Equipment:

  • Espresso and coffee machines
  • Digital scale

  • Ability to speak politely and effectively with customers, to meet customer service expectations and standards. 
  • Ability to apply basic concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios to practical situations.
  • Ability to work with minimum amount of supervision under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to follow directions, and procedures (i.e., checklists, Department Manual).
  • Basic communication skills and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to deliver information in a clear and respectable manner to fellow Team Members.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a sense of urgency.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and ability to see color.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to Hand use: single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling.  Work requires the following motions: bending, twisting, squatting and reaching.  Exposure to FDA approved cleaning chemicals.  Exposure to temperatures: <32 degrees Fahrenheit (freezers), 32-40 degrees Fahrenheit (refrigerators), >90 degrees Fahrenheit.  Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.  Ability to use tools and equipment, including knives, box cutters, and light machinery.  May require use of ladders.  Must be able to occasionally climb stairs.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), and work near moving mechanical parts.


The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
